  • Entering an open volume such as a patio, alcove, covered entry, rafter bay or loading dock. That is a netting job.

What Spikes Actually Do, and Where They Fail

Spikes work by removing the flat space a bird needs to put its feet down, which makes them reliable, cheap per foot and effectively permanent when they are installed correctly.

They are the least expensive option on a per linear foot basis, they need almost no maintenance on a clean ledge, and nothing about them relies on the bird being fooled. That last part matters, because it is the reason spikes still work in year five while a decoy owl stopped working in week two.

Now the failures, which are worth more than the sales pitch.

Too few rows. A single row of spikes on a ten inch parapet gives the bird a narrower place to stand, not no place to stand. Ledge depth decides row count. If a quote does not mention how many rows, that is a red flag.

What Netting Actually Does, and Where It Is the Only Option

Netting is the only product that closes an open volume, which makes it the right and often the sole answer for patios, alcoves, covered entries, open rafter bays, loading docks, warehouse trusses and parking structures.

If birds are flying into a space rather than landing on a surface, nothing else works. You cannot spike air. Netting done properly also has the longest service life of anything discussed here, and it is close to invisible from a distance once it is tensioned correctly.

The tradeoffs are real.

Cost. Netting is the most expensive option per project, and not mainly because of the net. The cost is in the edge cable, the anchors, the tensioning hardware, the layout and the access equipment needed to reach the perimeter. On a two story facade or a high open truss, access is often the biggest line item.

Installation sensitivity. Slack netting sags into a hammock and birds roost in it. Any edge or corner left untied is a door. Netting is the product where a cheap install fails fastest and most visibly.

Not for the panel gap. Draping net over or around a rooftop array is a bad fit. It does not hold a defined edge against panel frames, it traps debris, it makes future panel service awkward, and it looks like what it is.

The Third Option Most Arrays Actually Need

  • Full perimeter, not just the front edge you can see from the driveway. Sides and back are where the birds walk in.
  • Cut to the real gap, including where the roof plane changes and the rail height changes with it.
  • Corners and rail terminations worked last and closed deliberately. A two inch opening is a door.
  • Clipped to the panel frame with purpose-made fasteners. Nothing drilled through panels, racking or roof covering.
  • Nests, eggs and packed material removed and the area cleaned and sanitized first, before anything is closed up.

That last point is the one people skip to save money, and it is the one that comes back. Sealing a season of droppings and nesting material under fresh mesh looks fine in March and smells in July.

Cost, Honestly
