Most people put off cleaning panels because they are on the roof and out of reach, and then they wait for rain to do it. Rain does not do it. A proper cleaning is soft brush, low flow and purified water. Purified water carries no dissolved mineral, so the glass dries clear with nothing wiped on it. We work the array early while the glass is still cool, because cold water on hot glass is a risk in July and because water flashes off a hot panel before you can rinse it, which trades dust for spotting.

What Is Valley Dust Actually Costing Your Array?

More than most owners think, and the reason is that soiling is invisible until you look at numbers. A panel that looks fine from the driveway can be carrying an even film of agricultural dust that scatters light before it ever reaches the cell. Nothing looks broken. The array simply makes less than it should on a cloudless day.

One detail explains a lot of confusing production numbers. Soiling is not even across a panel. Dust washes down the glass and collects in a band along the bottom frame lip, where water beads and dries in place. That band shades the lowest row of cells, and because cells run in series, one shaded row drags on the whole string rather than just its own corner. It is why a panel that looks mostly clean can still be costing you, and why we clean the bottom edge and the frame channel instead of just the middle of the glass.

Check it yourself rather than taking a percentage from anybody, including us. Then look again a week after a cleaning. That is the honest measurement, and it is the one we tell customers to use.

Why You Should Never Pressure Wash A Solar Panel

Because a solar panel is a sealed electrical device with a precision optical surface on top, and pressure attacks both. The frame joints, the junction box and the cable glands are sealed against falling rain, not against a concentrated jet held six inches away. Force water past those seals and you no longer have a cleaning problem, you have a replacement problem.

The glass is the other half. Panels carry an anti-reflective coating whose whole job is to pull more light into the cell. Abrasive pads, acidic cleaners and high pressure wear that coating down, and you end up with a panel that looks clean and permanently makes less than it used to. Microcracks in the cells are the third risk, and they never show up visually at all. Manufacturers specify gentle washing and no abrasives for exactly these reasons, and damage traced back to improper cleaning is generally not covered.

One more honest thing, since somebody will try to sell you the opposite. If your monitoring shows no meaningful gap and your array sits on a steep residential pitch away from the orchards, you do not need quarterly cleaning. Once or twice a year covers most Fresno rooftops. Ground mounts near a dairy, a dusty ag road or a low tilt commercial rack are the systems that genuinely need more, because a shallow tilt holds dust that a steep one sheds.

Panels get dirty here faster than almost anywhere else in California, and the reason is geography rather than anything you are doing wrong. Four things stack up.

There is no rinse cycle for half the year

In a wet climate, rain does most of the work and a cleaning is cosmetic. Here, the dry season runs roughly May through October, which is exactly the stretch with the longest days and the strongest sun. Your array produces most of its annual output during the months when nothing is washing it. That is the whole problem in one sentence.

Ag dust, and it is not ordinary dust

Discing, harvest and open field work put fine soil into the air across the whole Valley floor, and almond harvest in particular is a serious dust event in the late summer. This material is fine, it is mineral, and it cements onto glass once dew settles on it overnight and dries in the morning sun. That is why a panel that looks lightly dusty does not simply rinse off with a hose. It is not sitting on the glass, it is bonded to it.

Sprinkler overspray and hard water

Valley water is hard. On a ground mount or a low roof within reach of a sprinkler head, every cycle leaves mineral spotting that builds into a permanent-looking haze. This one is worth checking yourself, because if the fix is turning a sprinkler head fifteen degrees, you should do that instead of paying anyone.

Wildfire smoke film

Smoke season leaves a greasy, fine film that ordinary dust does not. It does not brush off and it holds onto everything that lands on it afterwards. In a heavy smoke year the array gets noticeably worse in a matter of weeks.

Put together, this is why a single cleaning is the right answer for some people and a genuinely poor answer for others. If you are near an orchard, an unpaved road or a field, the array will be measurably dirty again within months.

• Deionised or filtered water, soft brush, no pressure. Pure water dries without leaving minerals behind, which is the whole reason we do not clean panels with a hose and a squeegee. Never a pressure washer, never an abrasive, and never anything that touches the anti-reflective coating.
• Early or late, not midday. Cold water on hot glass is how panels get thermally shocked. In summer that means we are there early rather than at two in the afternoon.
• A look underneath. Nest debris, droppings and anything blocking airflow under the array gets flagged. Panels run hotter and produce less when the air under them is packed with material, and it is the single most common thing found on a Valley roof.
• A look at the obvious. Cracked glass, a visibly discoloured panel, a loose clamp, a conduit that has come adrift. We are not electricians and we will not pretend to diagnose your system, but we are the only people up there and we will send you a photo of anything that looks wrong.
• Photos each visit. So you have a record, and so you can see whether it was actually dirty or whether we should be stretching your interval.

If the same visit finds birds under the array, that is a bird prevention job, and doing it while the access is already set up is the cheapest time it will ever be. The same goes for the roof itself. If the tile around the array is growing moss, roof cleaning on the same visit saves a whole second setup.
