Birds are not being stubborn, they are being practical. A ledge that is flat, sheltered and about the width of a pigeon is a good place to stand, and they will keep coming back to it for as long as it stays that way. Spikes remove the flat part. Nothing about the bird changes, the ledge just stops being worth landing on.
The strips are stainless wire set into a base. Two things decide whether they work. The first is coverage, meaning every inch of usable ledge right out to the corners, because a pigeon will happily use the four inches you left bare behind the strip. On anything wider than about four inches, one row is a perch guard with a landing pad behind it, and the ledge needs two or three rows to actually be closed.
The second is fastening. On a painted parapet cap or coping we bond with a construction adhesive, because putting screws through a horizontal surface on top of a building is how you create leaks that show up next winter. On masonry, steel and signage we can fasten mechanically. In July we work the shaded side in the morning, because adhesive skins over fast on a surface sitting at 140 degrees and a skinned bead does not bond to anything.
Before any of that, the mess comes off. That is not an upsell, it is the part that makes the install hold and the part that protects whoever has to work up there. There is a whole section on it below.
Pricing depends on how many linear feet of ledge, how high it is and how we reach it, what surface we are fastening to, how many rows the ledge width needs, and how much cleanup and sanitizing comes first. One written number before we start.
Spikes go where birds stand: ledges, parapet caps, sign tops, open beams, window sills, light fixtures, cameras and exposed rooflines.
The install is only as good as the survey that comes before it. Droppings tell you where the roost is, and roosting is different from perching. A heavy pile in one spot with staining running down the wall underneath is a night roost and it needs full coverage. Scattered marks along a whole ledge are daytime perching, which is easier to move but still needs the ledge closed properly or they simply shuffle along it.
We also look at what is nearby, because exclusion moves birds rather than removing them. If we close a parapet and the next best ledge is your neighbor tenant sign, that is worth planning for rather than discovering later.
For the two problems we get called about most in the Valley, birds living under a rooftop solar array and sparrows in a dryer vent, spikes are not the answer. Solar gets a mesh critter guard clipped around the panel edge and vents get a guard. We install both, so we have no reason to fit the wrong one.
What a properly installed spike line does, and what it deliberately leaves to other methods.
Because almost every failed spike job we get called to fix failed for one of three reasons: the ledge was never cleaned, the coverage had a gap, or the adhesive went onto a surface that was too hot or too dirty to bond.
We start on the ground with binoculars and a walk around the building. Where the staining runs down a wall tells you which ledge is the night roost. Where the droppings are dry and scattered tells you it is a daytime perch. Which side of the building it is on tells you the birds are chasing shade, which in a Fresno July they always are, so the roost is almost never on the sunny elevation.
Then the ledge gets cleaned properly, and that is a separate job from the install. Droppings get wetted down with a disinfectant instead of dry swept, because dry sweeping puts the dust into the air everyone is breathing. Then scraped, bagged, disposed of, sanitized and left to dry. Nest material comes out too, because it carries mites, and once the birds are excluded those mites go looking for a new host, which is how people end up with bites indoors a week after the birds left.
Only then does hardware go down, onto a clean dry surface, with the right fastening for what that surface is. We run the strips to the ends and around the returns, and where the ledge is wide we double or triple the rows rather than leaving a landing strip behind the first one.
Timing gets respected as well. Active nests of most native birds are protected while they are in use, and swallow mud nests under Valley eaves are the case that comes up most often here. Spikes would not stop a mud nest on a vertical wall anyway, so that work gets planned properly rather than rushed.

Droppings are acidic. Left on a ledge they eat into paint, galvanized metal, mortar joints and roof coatings, so the pile sitting up there is doing damage every month it stays. On a sign band it runs down the face and etches the finish. On a tile roof it soaks into the underlayment path.
The way it comes off matters. Dry sweeping or blowing a dry accumulation sends fine dust into the air, and that is the part nobody should be casual about. We wet it down with a disinfectant first, then scrape, bag and dispose of it, then sanitize the surface and let it dry. Whoever is working in it wears respiratory protection and gloves, and heavy accumulations get disposable suits.
Nest material gets removed rather than left in place, and this is the detail homeowners find out about the hard way. Old nests carry mites and other parasites. Exclude the birds and leave the nest, and the mites start looking for a new host, which for a nest above a bedroom window means inside the house. Pulling the material is what prevents that.
Then there is the practical reason. Construction adhesive bonds to a clean, dry, sound surface. It does not bond to bird waste, dust or damp coping. Every strip that peels off a parapet in year one went down on a surface that was never prepared.
The order we work is consistent: survey the roost, remove the nesting and droppings wet, sanitize, let it dry, install the exclusion, then wash the wall face below where the staining ran down. Skipping to the last step is how you end up with clean walls and the same birds.
Spikes are wrong under solar panels, on wide flat areas, against swallows, and anywhere leaf litter is going to fill them.
Under solar is the big one in this Valley. The gap between a panel and the roof is a shaded cavity, not a ledge. Spikes do not fit it, they do not stop a bird walking in from the side, and they collect debris that then becomes nesting material. The correct fix is a mesh critter guard clipped to the panel frame around the entire array perimeter, installed after the nesting is cleared and the roof is washed and sanitized. That is the job we do most often, and it is not a spike job.
Wide ledges, roof decks, open courtyards and beam grids are an area problem. Covering them in spikes gets expensive fast and still leaves gaps. Netting closes the whole volume off in one go and is usually the cheaper answer once the area passes a certain size.
Swallows are a different animal. They build mud nests on vertical walls under an eave, not on ledges, so there is nothing to spike. The answer is netting or a physical barrier installed outside the nesting window, because active nests of native birds are protected while they are in use.
Ledges under trees are a maintenance trap. Spikes fill with leaves, needles and seed, and once they pack solid a bird can nest on top of the very thing meant to stop it. If a ledge sits under heavy litter, plan on cleaning it out or use a method that does not collect.
Small openings need a different product entirely. Vents, gable louvers, dryer ducts and the gap where tile meets fascia get a guard or a screen, not a spike strip.
